In all of Kossman.dejong’s projects, light is an important, if not key medium. Light can steer the attention of the viewer in a certain direction. Light provides focus, and more or less light can draw more or less attention to certain elements of an exhibition. In a narrative space it isn’t about illumination, but about highlighting certain areas in the space or to charge objects with a sense of emotion and drama. Light is not only a very functional medium, but also contributes greatly to the dramatisation of a room. Light creates atmosphere and can be poetic. Kossmann.dejong often use light in a dynamic way, by synchronising it with film or moving elements. Thus the mood in and the experience of an exhibition can change over time. Kossmann.dejong likes to work with lighting designers with ample experience in theatre, where light has been an integral component of the mise en scène for a long time, and is indispensable for a successful performance.
