Naturalis Biodiversity Center – ‘Death’
Naturalis Biodiversity Center
For the renewal of Naturalis Biodiversity Center in Leiden, Kossmann.dejong designed a permanent exhibition about Death. The subject will be presented through symbolism, poetry and the addition of a bit of humor in a fresh, light-minded way.
Visitors will step into a welcoming, enchanting world, where they experience that ‘death’ is not as unambiguous as they would think initially. Also, life wouldn’t exist without death and vice versa: this is the cycle of life.
Moving through a maze, you can sense the mysteriousness and unpredictability of death. Visitors are emerged and at times lose all sense of the surrounding building. You cannot oversee the space at once, it is unclear what lies around the corner. Through the quiet atmosphere intimate moment of reflection are created. A composition of sound and light and surprising objects lead the visitor onwards, onto the heart of the exhibition, where life and dead meet.
There are nine exhibitions in the renewed Naturalis, of which two have been designed by Kossmann.dejong: introduction exhibition ‘Life’ and the exhibition ‘Death’ on the top-floor.
